This coin series is inspired by the monarchic and human virtues that defined - and continue to define - Maria Theresa’s persona. Even during her lifetime, the historical figure and the myth surrounding her became inseparable. The series vividly illustrates the many roles Maria Theresa embodied in the history of Austria. These characterizations are combined with four portraits depicting her as a young woman, as a consort, as a widow, and together with her successor, Joseph II.
All coin designs are based on medals that were struck during Maria Theresa’s reign; our engravers used these as models and created works with unusually high relief. This gives the coins a distinctive presence and sculptural depth.
“Courage and Determination” and “Justice and Severity” were issued in 2017; “Clemency and Faith in God” and “Wisdom and Reforms” completed the series in 2018.
